Top 10 revitalising lunch breaks

Your lunch hours add up to five hours per week. That’s nearly 22 hours in the average month. We say, get out there and use it! These are our favourite ways of making the most of this time …

1. Go for a run

Use your lunch break as running time. Running is one of the best forms of exercise, not only for getting fit but for weight control too. A 30-minute run, three to four times a week, trims your waistline, strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves muscle tone and definition, and installs a positive mental attitude.

A running break away from your desk will leave you more refreshed with boundless energy all afternoon.

2. Go dating

- Single guys and gals can go online to one of the many online dating websites. According to the Office For National Statistics, the lunch hour is the peak time for many single people looking for their perfect date.

If you get a date, a lunch break is perfect  it’s enough time to suss them out, and if you aren’t keen, you always have the excuse of getting back to work in an hour and you haven’t wasted a Saturday night!

3. Take the plunge

If there’s a swimming pool near your work you have no excuse, get down there! Most pools have lanes sectioned off over the lunch period. If there isn’t one near work, why not work through your lunch break and leave an hour early to go after work? Half an hour’s swimming burns off more than 300 calories, and it’s great for stress relief and improving your all-over body shape.

4. Write a letter

Writing is a great stress-buster and can help you air your deepest emotions. You could scribble your thoughts in a diary, or write to someone you have been meaning to for months. It will make you feel amazing.

5. Hit the gym

Virtually all gyms now have shorter classes especially designed for people’s lunch breaks. An active class will boost your energy for the afternoon ahead, or a yoga class could relieve any tension that built up over the morning.

6. Call your parents or grandparents

Ever feel guilty for not calling enough? Calling the folks is something many of us wish we did more often. So, use your lunch break! You will feel great about it afterwards, and if they start rambling on, you always have the excuse that you have to get back to work!

7. Power walking

Go for a power walk. The benefits of walking are endless, but to name a few it will help relieve stress, it could improve your blood pressure, reduce body fat, lower the risk of coronary heart disease and strokes, increase bone density, and lots more.

Also, you could burn off more than 250 calories in your lunch break! We are meant to take 10,000 steps per day. Why not get a pedometer to find out how many you take?

8. Coffee lounge

Treat yourself to your favourite coffee in your favourite coffee shop. Let’s face it, we all love the pick-up we get from coffee, so let’s enjoy it. Although too much can keep us artificially stimulated and awake at night, the positive benefits are: it can greatly reduce your risk of type-2 diabetes, colon cancer and Parkinson’s disease. The coffee shop is a relaxing break from the office and can really help you though the afternoon. In fact, a study from the University of Arizona found that drinking coffee boosts your memory and can prevent you from tiring for hours!

9. Travel agents

If you have had a bad morning, what could be better than planning your next trip away? Go to your nearest travel agents to get all the latest brochures, then pour over them dreaming about where you could go. The skiing brochures are out as early as August - so if you are a fanatical skier or snowboarder, get the brochures early and drool over your next trip.

10. Time for reflection

Taking some quiet time out on your own can help reduce stress and anxiety, and helps put any problems into perspective. Rather than wandering the shops, go and visit the art galleries or wander through the park.
